Borrowed from German Poliomyelitis, from the (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Ancient Greek πολιός (poliós, “grey”) + μυελός (muelós, “marrow”) + -ῖτις (-îtis, “-itis”). Compare the French poliomyélite.
