Borrowed from Late Latin protocollum (the first sheet of a volume (on which contents and errata were written)), from Byzantine Greek πρωτόκολλον (prōtókollon, first sheet glued onto a manuscript), from πρῶτος (prôtos, first) + κόλλα (kólla, glue).
