Etymology

From a contraction/syncopation of an earlier pretosemolo, with metathesis from petrosemolo, from a Vulgar Latin *petrosenilo (with influence from semen)[1], itself with metathesis from Latin petroselīnum[2], from Ancient Greek πετροσέλινον (petrosélinon), from πέτρα (pétra, stone) + σέλινον (sélinon, celery).
