Etymology[edit]
From Middle Mongolian [script needed] (qadaɣa), [script needed] (qadaɣala), itself a borrowing from Turkic, compare Old Turkic [script needed] (qadaɣla, “to guard, protect”), a derivation of Old Turkic [script needed] (qadaɣ) [1]. Possibly ultimately a derivation of Proto-Turkic *kad-, whence also Azerbaijani qayğı (“care”). Cognate with Turkish kadağa (“prohibition”), Persian قدغن. Compare Georgian ყადაღა (q̇adaɣa), Northern Kurdish qedexe, Turkic borrowings.
