Equivalent to ræddes (“be afraid”) + -sel (“act of”). From Old Danish ræzæl, ræzlæ, from Old Norse hræzla, from hræða (“to scare”) + -sla (“act of”). Cognate with Norwegian redsel and Swedish rädsla.
