Inherited from Proto-Slavic *rъděti, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *rudḗˀtei, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁rudʰéh₁ti, from the root *h₁rewdʰ- (red). Cognate to German röten and Latin rubeō.
