Borrowed from Latin religiō, religiōnem (scrupulousness”, “pious misgivings”, “superstition”, “conscientiousness”, “sanctity”, “an object of veneration”, “cult-observance”, “reverence), from relegō (I bind back or behind), from re + legō (I choose, select; collect, gather).
