Etymology

From Old Galician-Portuguese reprender (compare Galician reprender), from Latin reprendere, variant of reprehendere, present active infinitive of reprehendō (compare Spanish reprender, Catalan and French reprendre). The older, inherited form, reprender (not to be confused with a separate word of the same spelling composed from re- and prender) was modified to more closely reflect the Latin etymon.
