[edit]From Italian rigare, from riga (“line”) + -are, inherited from Old Italian riga, from Lombardic rīga (“line, row”), from Proto-Germanic *rīgǭ, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁reyk- (-kh-) (“to scratch, cut”).
