Romanian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Unknown. Compare Latin roseus. Probably from the verb rușina, itself from roși (turn red, blush), from roșu. Other explanations derive it from a Vulgar Latin root *rōsīnus (rosy), *russiō or *rōsiō. May possibly be also from a Romanian *rușiciune, from roși. Compare Aromanian arushini, arusheni, rusheni, Megleno-Romanian rușǫni.
