Etymology[edit]
Compound of rumah (“house”) + makan (“eat”), literally “eating house”. Compare to Chinese 飯館/饭馆 (“restaurant”, literally “food/cuisine + house”) or Dutch eethuis (“diner, restaurant”, literally “eat house”).
