Etymology[edit]

Uncertain. Probably from Latin Sancta Diana or *sanctae Dianae, indicating a pre-Christian deity. (compare Calabrian curse expression santu Diana). Other theories include Sanctus dies Iohannes or a confusion with it. Also, compare the related cosânzeană and zână.
