From Proto-West Germanic *sāmikwiku, from Proto-Germanic *sēmikwikwaz (half-dead, literally half-alive), from Proto-Indo-European *sēmigʷih₃wós, equivalent to sām- (half-) +‎ cwic (living, alive). Cognate with Old Saxon sāmkwik, Old High German sāmikwek, sāmiquek.
