From Old Galician-Portuguese çapato, çapata, from Old Spanish çapato, of unknown origin. Cognate with Galician zapato (shoe), Spanish zapato (shoe), Basque zapata (shoe), Catalan sabata (shoe), Occitan sabata (shoe), French savate (worn-out (old) shoe) and Italian ciabatta (slipper).
