From Middle High German schilhen, from Old High German skilhen, skilahen, skilihen, from Proto-West Germanic *skilhijan (to squint, be cross-eyed), from Proto-Germanic *skelh (slanted, crooked; squinted), from Proto-Germanic *skelhaz (squint-eyed, sloped, awry), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kel- (bent, crooked). Cognate with German schielen and scheel, Dutch scheel, Old English *sċīelan and sċeolh.
