From the verb segja (to say) + -st (a suffix which turns verbs into middle voice verbs). See also the appendix about the Icelandic middle voice verbs.

Usage notes

  • The verb segjast is mostly used in indirect speech when talking about oneself.
    Hann segist vera duglegur. = Hann segir að hann sé duglegur.
    He says he's hard-working.
