Etymology[edit]

Japanese 柳葉魚 (ししゃも, shishamo, literally willow leaf fish) (kanji are ateji, or rather jukujikun), from Ainu susam, presumably from susu (willow) + ham (leaf). “Willow leaf” is due to the fish’s slender shape, similar to the shape of a willow leaf.

Noun[edit]

shishamo (plural shishamos)

  1. Spirinchus lanceolatus, a Japanese smelt.
