Etymology

From Medieval Latin, Vulgar Latin *exēligere, present active infinitive of *exēligō, from Latin ex (out of, from) + ēligō (I pick out, choose, elect). Compare Italian scegliere, Venetian sèlier, sièlder, Sicilian scègghiri, scègliri. Cf. also French élire and (obsolete) Spanish esleír.
