Etymology[edit]

From Medieval Latin, Vulgar Latin *exēligere, present active infinitive of *exēligō, from Latin ex ‎(out of, from) + ēligō ‎(I pick out, choose, elect). Compare Sicilian scègghiri, scègliri, Venetian sèlier, sièlder, Friulian sielzi. Cf. also French élire and (obsolete) Spanish esleír. Doublet of eleggere.
