Etymology
First attested in 1653; formed as the (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Latin sinciput (stem: sincipit-) + the English -al on the pattern of a (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Latin etymon of the form sincipitālis, which is first attested later (in 1757); compare the French sincipital (first attested in 1812).
