From Proto-Germanic *skellǭ. If not inherited through Old Norse, borrowed from Middle Low German schelle. Cognate with German Schelle (“small bell”). Related with the verb below.

From Old Swedish skælla (“to bark, to scold”), from Old Norse skella, from Proto-Germanic *skallijaną.

1. (of dogs) to bark
   • de är allasammans stumma hundar, som icke kunna skälla

     they are all dumb dogs, they cannot bark (Isaiah 56:10)

2. (transitively with ut or på) to scold, to tell off

   De blev utskällda/skälldes ut/fick sig en utskällning för att de inte följt reglerna
