From Old Danish skiemt, from the verb skiemte, skæmpte, thus modern Danish skæmte, the word is essentially derived from a Old Danish adjective (skam, obsolete), meaning short. See Icelandic skammur. Cognate with Swedish skämt, Norwegian Bokmål skjemt, Norwegian Nynorsk skjemt, Faroese skemt, and Icelandic skemmtun.
