From Proto-Balto-Slavic *(s)keit-, *(s)kait-, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kʷoyt-, Proto-Indo-European *(s)kʷeyt- (to notice). Cognate with Latvian skaitīt, Russian читать (čitatʹ, read), Sanskrit चेतति (cétati, to perceive, take notice of).[1]
