From Vulgar Latin *snellus (brisk, lively) (compare Old French esnel, isnel (sudden, quick), Occitan isnel, irnel (lively)), from Frankish *snell, *snel (sudden, quick) from Proto-Germanic *snellaz (active, sudden, quick). Akin to Old High German snel, snell (bold, agile, lively, swift, brisk). More at snell.
