From Proto-Germanic *spurdz (stadium, racetrack), from Proto-Indo-European *sperdʰ- (contest). Cognate with Old High German spurt (racetrack, racing course), Gothic 𐍃𐍀𐌰𐌿𐍂𐌳𐍃 (spaurds, racetrack).
