From Proto-Germanic *staggijô (stag, male animal, porcupine), from Proto-Indo-European *stegʰ-, *stengʰ- (to prick, stick, pierce), equivalent to *stac- (compare Old English staca) +‎ -ga (diminutive suffix). Cognate with Old Norse steggi (male animal, drake).
