- (informal) Drunk from a long (possibly overnight) session of drinking alcohol.
- 1917, John Locke, The Red Planet:
- She was stale-drunk; she had, doubtless, a vile headache; probably she felt twinges of remorse and apprehension of possible police interference.
- 1982, Race Today, volumes 14-16, page 170:
- He counted all the points in favour of his staying home: from the long night he was still tired and sleepy; also he was stale drunk; and the traffic jams!
