[edit]Etymology
[edit]Compound of storstad (“metropolis; large city”) + -s- + område (“area”). First attested in 1947.[1]
Noun
[edit]storstadsområde n
- a metropolitan area, a conurbation
- Synonyms: konurbation, storstadsregion
Usage notes
[edit]- Generally, the three Swedish metropolitan areas are Stockholm, Göteborg, and Malmö.
- When referring to a specific metropolitan area, one can;
- Place the prefix stor- (“large, great”) in front of the city name, such as Storstockholm (“Greater Stockholm”), Storlondon (“Greater London”), and Storköpenhamn (“Greater Copenhagen”).
- Place the suffix -område (“area, region”) after the name of the city, such as Stockholmsområdet (“the Stockholm area”), Göteborgsområdet (“the Gothenburg area”), and Köpenhamnsområdet (“the Copenhagen area”).
- Note; that while the term region (“region”) can be used for the whole area, e.g. Stockholmsregionen (“the Stockholm region”), it can also refer to the local administration and municipal body, e.g. Region Stockholm (“Region Stockholm”) including the specific borders of that administration.
