From Old High German suohhen, from Proto-Germanic *sōkijaną, from Proto-Indo-European *seh₂g- (seek out). Akin to Low German söken, sooken, Dutch zoeken, English seek, Danish søge, Gothic 𐍃𐍉𐌺𐌾𐌰𐌽 (sōkjan).
