From Old Swedish svæva‚ likely borrowed from Middle Low German swēven (modern sweven), from Old Saxon *swivian, from Proto-Germanic *swibjaną. Doublet of sviva. Cognate with Dutch zweven, West Frisian sweve, German schweben.
