sydneyntunneliverkkohämähäkki
Finnish
Etymology
sydneyn (“of Sydney”) + tunneli (“tunnel”) + hämähäkki (“spider”); misunderstood calque of English Sydney funnel-web spider based on confusing funnel with tunnel.
Noun
sydneyntunneliverkkohämähäkki
- Sydney funnel-web spider, Atrax robustus (highly venomous funnel-web spider chiefly found in the area surrounding Sydney, Australia)
Usage notes
This is probably the most used Finnish term for Atrax robustus, but sydneynsuppilohämähäkki would be more correct given that funnel-web spider is suppilohämähäkki or suppiloverkkohämähäkki in Finnish.
