Etymology[edit]

From Ancient Greek σύν (sún, with) + ᾠόν (ōión, egg) (although the v is from or influenced by Latin ovum (egg), as synovial fluid resembles the white of an egg.

  1. The soft tissue which lines the non-cartilaginous surfaces within joints with cavities (synovial joints). It may emit a joint-lubricating fluid called synovial fluid or simply, synovia.
