From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *r-tsəj (medicine; juice; paint). Cognate with Burmese ဆေး (hce:, medicine, paint, tobacco), Nuosu (cy) (as in (bbut cy, medicine)), Tangut 𗿧 (*tsə̣¹, medicine), Jingpho tsi (medicine). Compare Lhao Vo cid', Zaiwa chi and Hpon kăʃì(ʔ) (medicine; tobacco).
