    Uncertain; already in Middle Irish confused with teidhm and may have originated as a by-form of it.

      Back-formation from the verbal noun taomadh, from Middle Irish táemad, from táem (fit, paroxysm) (see etymology 1).

      The phonetic similitarity between taom and English teem is coincidental.
