[edit]Uncertain; already in Middle Irish confused with teidhm and may have originated as a by-form of it.

[edit]Back-formation from the verbal noun taomadh, from Middle Irish táemad, from táem (“fit, paroxysm”) (see etymology 1).
The phonetic similitarity between taom and English teem is coincidental.
