  1. A strip of material designed to be torn to open a package.
    • 1970, Official Gazette of the United States Patent Office:
      [] a ridge portion on the lower end of the cap engages a rib on the container so that the cap cannot be removed without tearing off a tearstrip formed by the ridge and the lower portion of the cap skirt.
