From Middle Cornish tenna, tenne, from Proto-Brythonic *tɨnnɨd, from either Latin tendō or a Proto-Celtic cognate - ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *tend- (extend, pull). Cognate with Breton tennañ, Irish teann (to press), Manx çhionn (tighten), and Welsh tynnu.
