[edit]Partly from Middle Low German tōvallich, tōvellich from tōval (“occasion, instance”) + -ich and partly from tillfälle + -ig. Cognate with, but with a different meaning than, Danish tilfældig, Norwegian tilfeldig, German zufällig and Dutch toevallig.
