From Primitive Irish ᚈᚑᚃᚔᚄᚐᚉᚔ (tovisaci, genitive), from Proto-Celtic *towissākos (leader) (compare Welsh tywysog (prince)), from either Proto-Indo-European *wedʰ- (lead) or Proto-Indo-European *weyd- (know, see).
