- (historical) copyholder (tenant of a farm who paid his rent by working for the landlord, and earned his own living mainly from the rented land)
- (figuratively, ironic) By extension, any person who is in a long-term relation in which he/she feels that the best part of his work goes to the benefit of someone else.
