Etymology

From Latin tuscus (Etruscan), in the context of Vicus Tuscus in Rome, whose inhabitants had a bad reputation. Compare Venetian tosco (boor), Spanish tosco (crude, rough, uncouth), Catalan tosc (rough, coarse), compare also Albanian toskë.
