The ancestor of Catalan is Old Catalan (roa-oca)., from Vulgar Latin *trifulum < *trifolum, from Latin trifolium, calque of Ancient Greek τρίφυλλον (tríphullon, “clover”), from τρία (tría, “three”) + φύλλον (phúllon, “leaf”).
