Vietnamese[edit]

Etymology[edit]

See the main entry trái. This is not a reflex of Northern Middle Vietnamese blái attested in Dictionarium Annamiticum Lusitanum et Latinum (1651). The diphthongization of *eː > /əj/ is a characteristic of the North Central dialects and is not related to the *eː > /aːj/ in the mainstream dialects.
