Inherited from Old Norse [Term?]. Compare Icelandic þrúga f, Old Norse þrjúgr m, Swedish tryga f (“snowshoe for a horse”) and dialectal Swedish tryg m.

Attested in 1646 by Christen Jensøn as Tryer. Also attested by Jacob Nicolai Wilse (1780) in Spydeberg dialect spelled as Truer (plural). Erik Pontoppidan in Glossarium Norvagicum (1749) gives two different spellings: Mand-Trouviæ for a human snowshoe and Tryer (plural) for horse snowshoes. David Klim in the 17th century also gives Man-trøuwjæ as a separate term, so does also Søren Richart Hagerup in 1770-s.
