[edit]From New Latin thyreoīdēs + -ach; the Latin is from Ancient Greek θυρεοειδής (thureoeidḗs, “shield-shaped”), from θυρεός (thureós, “oblong shield”) + -ειδής (-eidḗs, “-form, -like”).
