Etymology
[edit]Formally upa- + ā- + dā + -ya, the absolutive of *upādāyati or *upādadāyati, but the verb only exists in the passive form upādiyati, which has active meaning. This absolutive then serves as a preposition.
Verb
[edit]upādāya
- absolutive of upādiyati (“take up”)
Adverb
[edit]Usage notes
[edit]Befitting its verbal origin, this preposition takes the accusative case.
