Romanian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Unknown. Possibly from Albanian vapë (hot weather),[1][2] from Old Italian vapa (vapor),[3] from Latin vapor (heat, hot air), though the relationship between the words is uncertain. Another theory is that it is linked to a Vulgar Latin root *vapalia, from vapa.[4] Compare Sicilian vampa.

văpaie f (plural văpăi)

  1. flame, blaze
  2. (figuratively) passion
