From Vulgar Latin vāscella, from the neuter plural of Late Latin vāscellum, diminutive of Latin vāsculum, diminutive of vās (vessel). Compare Portuguese baixela, Italian vasellame, Catalan varicella, French vaisselle. Cognate with English vessel.
