Latvian[edit]
Etymology[edit]
Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *wel- (“to tear, to spend”). Cognates include Latgalian valūda (“id.”), Lithuanian valandà (“hour, moment, time”).
Alternatively related to Proto-West Slavic *volati (“to call”). Confer Polish wołać, Czech volat.
