From vara (be) +‎ hugget (cut (slashed)) +‎ som (as) +‎ stucket (stabbed), developed from earlier "varken huggen eller stucken" ("neither cut nor stabbed" – neither one thing or the other; neither here nor there), from German weder gehauen noch gestochen, from fencing lingo.
