From Middle High German vēlen, vælen, from Old French falir, faillir, from Vulgar Latin *fallīre, from Latin falere (to deceive; to mistake; to be unseen). Doublet of Sette Comuni dialect véelan (to fail; to err). Cognate with German fehlen.
